ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Willa Brigham, storyteller extraordinaire and host of the Emmy award-winning show 'Smart Start Kids' will regale patrons of North Regional Library Saturday as it celebrates one year in its new location at 7009 Harps Mill Road.

Willa will perform at 1 p.m. for preschoolers and again at 3 for school-age kids and adults. What can attendees expect?

'My stories are educational, motivational and entertaining,' Brigham said. 'There's call-and-response and a lot of interaction. I teach them in songs -- it's so much more fun to sing when you're learning.'

Photos are encouraged, so bring your camera.

'Smart Start Kids' airs locally at 10 a.m. Saturdays on WRAL.

CAUTION: SNOW ANGELS AHEAD

Mother Nature didn't pull through for us, but the folks at Wakefield Development Company are going to make up for it from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday when they will bring truckloads of shaved ice to create its Snow Extravaganza. The developers promise several feet sprayed all around the Bedford Clock Tower and Town Square in the Bedford at Falls River neighborhood at 4390 Falls River Ave.

Bring your hat, gloves and maybe a few carrots to take part in the best snowman contest, the best snow angel contest and a snowball contest in which the mighty arm that throws the farthest snowball wins. Refreshments will be available under the clock tower and children's activities will be held in the recreation center. The event benefits the local chapter of The Salvation Army so be sure to bring hats, gloves and mittens and other warm clothing to donate.

The public is invited, but sign up by sending an e-mail message to activitiesdirector@bedfordtraditions.com or calling 792-0188.
