'SOUPER' BOWL FOOD DRIVE
It may be hard to judge the size of this shopping cart by the photo, but it's 13 feet tall -- that's plenty of room for the nonperishable food items Benson Memorial United Methodist Church, 4706 Creedmoor Road, hopes will be donated Sunday.
The Got to Be NC motorized shopping cart is on loan from the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for the church's annual Souper Bowl Sundae and Fill the Basket Day. The public is invited to attend the church's 8:45 a.m. or 11 a.m. service -- or just drive up and drop off food such as peanut butter, jelly, cereals and soup. The food will benefit North Raleigh Ministries' food pantry. North Raleigh Ministries is a nonprofit community center for people in emergency situations who live in the North Raleigh community.
The ministry operates a crisis center, which offers financial assistance, a food pantry and a thrift shop, which generates revenue. The thrift store is at the corner of Atlantic and Spring Forest roads.
"It's a great way for churches to partner their resources together," said Jon Strother, senior pastor at Benson Memorial. "It helps people who have an emergency need for food or utilities assistance that might prevent them from being left in the dark or cold."
