RALEIGH - Undefeated Broughton, the No. 1-ranked boys soccer team in the state, continued its winning ways Thursday night.

The Caps didn't score until after 84 minutes of play, but that was enough in a 1-0 overtime win over Leesville Road in the Cap Seven tournament final.

Broughton (22-0-1) and Leesville Road (14-5-3) enter the state playoffs next week as the league's top two seeds.

Although undefeated, the Caps have endured a challenging season after winning the state title last year and starting this season ranked first in the state.

"Last year, we climbed in the polls during the season and got to No. 2 before we won the championship," Broughton coach Izzy Hernandez said. "This year, we started at the top, and it's been tough, but I'm really proud of the kids."

Three of Leesville Road's losses have been to Broughton, but Pride coach Chip Stone still would like a fourth shot -- because that would mean both teams would reach the N.C. High School Athletic Association's Eastern Regional final.

"We had some opportunities early, but just didn't score," Stone said. "And they adjusted like good teams do. Then they scored when they had an opportunity."

Just more than four minutes into the first overtime period, Broughton's Kevin Stam booted in a free kick from Brandon Haynes for the only goal.

"Leesville defended it well, but Brandon put the ball in a good place for me to score," Stam said.

Hernandez said, "Kevin hasn't scored a lot, but he does so much for us. And it was a nice service into the box by Brandon.

"And the defense played 100 minutes without giving up a goal, which says a lot."

Broughton goalkeeper Scott Goodwin gave credit for the shutout to the defenders in front of him.

"Our games with Leesville are always great games," Goodwin said. "Max Greene, Ryan Attayek, Abed Qadura, Ben Iiames, the whole defense, played great, which makes it easy for me."

Leesville Road's defense, led by keeper J.P. Davis, also was outstanding.

"Davis did a good job," Stone said. "And Bo Burns, the forward up top, gave them fits."
