Broughton defeated Athens Drive 3-1 on Saturday in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A boys soccer playoffs.

Broughton junior Brandon Haynes scored two goals. All three Caps goals were scored within the first 10 minutes.

"It started off really well, and we sustained it for the full amount," Broughton coach Izzy Hernandez said.

In other 4-A games, Bo Burns scored the winning goal for Leesville Road in a 3-2 win over Greenville Rose and Apex beat Hoke County 7-0.

In 3-A action, Wilson Fike edged Harnett Central 1-0, Burlington Williams beat Southern Lee 3-0, Pikeville Aycock defeated Erwin Triton 5-1 and Rocky Mount blanked Western Guilford 5-0.

In 2-A, Cardinal Gibbons won 9-1 over Bunn, and Cedar Ridge's Eli Garner scored the winning goal in a 4-3 decision over Franklinton.

In 1-A, Kernersville Bishop McGuinness beat Siler City Jordan-Matthews 4-1 and Topsail blanked Hobbton 6-0.

CONLEY WINS IN VOLLEYBALL: It might have taken five games, but Greenville Conley managed a dramatic win over West Iredell to capture the NCHSAA 3-A state volleyball title.

After losing the first game 25-20, Conley (24-4) took the second game 25-15, but dropped the third game 25-21. Conley rallied to take the fourth game 25-22 and won the fifth and deciding game 15-7.

Conley senior Stephanie Lombardo was named MVP of the 3-A title match. She finished with 15 kills and five digs.

West Iredell finished the season at 22-6.

GREENE CENTRAL TAKES TENNIS TITLE: Greene Central didn't have an easy time taking the NCHSAA 2-A dual-team tennis title from defending state champ Salisbury.

It all came down to Greene Central's doubles team of Elizabeth McLawhorn and Abby Sugg.

They got the better of Salisbury's Brooke Johnson and Shea Comadoll, 10-4.

The win left Greene Central with a 23-2 record. Salisbury, meanwhile, suffered its first loss in 23 dual matches.

CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC TOPS IN 3-A TENNIS: Charlotte Catholic didn't need doubles matches to take the 3-A dual team tennis crown, beating Eastern Wayne 5-0.
