Broughton coach Izzy Hernandez said Watt Williams is the type of player that scorers want on their side.

"Watt is going to get the ball to the right player at the right time," Hernandez said.

Williams led the Caps in assists the past two seasons as Broughton rolled to back-to-back N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A titles.

He had 24 assists during the 2006 season, in which the Caps went 26-1-0, and had 16 goals and 26 assists this season when the Caps went 28-0-1.

But Williams' unselfish play has reaped some individual awards as well.

He recently was named the state's player of the year by the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association.

Last weekend he was named to the National Soccer Coaches of America Association All-America team; joining him were Sean Haglund, a senior at North Raleigh Christian, and Ben Newman, a junior at East Forsyth.

"I know I didn't get this award just by myself," Williams said Monday. "This is simply amazing, and it is such a big accomplishment; but I know that a huge part of it was our team's success. A lot of the credit goes to our team."

Hernandez said Williams has outstanding skills, but his ability to see the field and to make the right passes elevated his game.

"He is a very unselfish player," Hernandez said. "He is always looking to brush off a pass."

The All-America banquet will be held Jan. 19 in Baltimore.
