Baylor game reset for Aug. 28

Wake Forest's opening football game at Baylor has been rescheduled for Thursday, Aug. 28, in order to accommodate a national television audience, Jeremy Langer, Fox Sports Net vice president of collegiate sports and acquisitions, announced Thursday.

Aug. 28 is the first permissible date of play for NCAA football teams. The game had originally been set for Aug. 30.

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, Texas. The telecast will be made available across the nation on Fox Sports Net's 16 owned and operated regional sports networks, including FSN South.

MORE FOOTBALL

PATERNO TREATED FOR DEHYDRATION: Penn State coach Joe Paterno spent several hours at a hospital being treated for dehydration before returning home late Thursday.

The 81-year-old coach had been working at home late in the morning when he began feeling nauseated and was taken by ambulance to Mount Nittany Medical Center, team spokesman Guido D'Elia said. Paterno had tests at the hospital but was not admitted.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

DAKICH GETS SETTLEMENT: Indiana University has reached a settlement with former interim coach Dan Dakich, paying him the $185,000 he was scheduled to earn next school year.

Dakich replaced Kelvin Sampson after the NCAA accused Sampson of five major rules violations in February. The university gave Sampson a $750,000 buyout.

Dakich, who played and coached under Bob Knight at Indiana, went 3-4 in the Hoosiers' final seven games, including a loss to Arkanas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

ODOM WILL BE HONORED: Former South Carolina coach Dave Odom will be honored by the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame.

Odom retired this season after seven years with the Gamecocks and won more than 400 games in his head coaching career with East Carolina, Wake Forest and South Carolina.

He'll be given a Lifetime Achievement Award at next week's induction ceremonies.

GRAMBLING HIRES DUCKETT: Rick Duckett, an assistant coach at South Carolina for the last six seasons, was hired as the coach at Grambling State.

Duckett compiled a 150-75 record in eight seasons as head coach at Fayetteville State and Winston-Salem State. He got his start in coaching as an undergraduate at North Carolina, leading the junior varsity program for Dean Smith.

THURSDAY'S RESULTS

WOMEN'S TENNIS

NO. 8 CALIFORNIA 4, NO. 9 DUKE 3: California eliminated Duke in the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

The Blue Devils (20-5) won the doubles point but lost four of six singles matches. Reka Zsilinszka and Amanda Granson posted Duke's singles wins.

Zsilinszka and Ellah Nze will play in the NCAA singles championships next week. Granson and Melissa Mang will play in the NCAA doubles championships.

SOFTBALL

BYU 3, NO. 13 UNC 0: Angeline Quiocho hit a three-run homer, her 18th of the year, in the top of the sixth inning to send the Cougars past the Tar Heels in NCAA regional play in Chapel Hill.

UNC (50-11-1) will play Campbell at 3:30 p.m. today in a losers' bracket game. Campbell lost to Georgia 9-0 earlier Thursday.

Danielle Spaulding (16-3) gave up four hits, struck out 14 and walked three for UNC.

Christina Gwyn Trice (18-7) allowed five hits for BYU (43-18), which plays Georgia today.

Georgia (44-22) took a 2-0 lead in the first and broke the game open with a seven-run third, taking advantage of three errors by Campbell (41-24).

Christie Hamilton (13-4) struck out five, walked four and allowed four hits for Georgia.
