Jonathan Byrd took advantage of soft fairways and receptive greens at TPC Sugarloaf on Friday, shooting his second straight 6-under 66 to take a three-stroke lead in the AT&T Classic in Duluth, Ga.
Byrd, seeking his fourth PGA Tour victory, shared the lead with Kenny Perry, Ryan Palmer and two others when the second round began.
The course was drenched with over an inch of rain Thursday and, though no precipitation fell in the second round, overcast conditions kept the sun from drying off the fairways and greens and making the course play faster.
Perry and Palmer shot 69s to drop into a tie for second. Parker McLachlin, another first-round leader, shot a 70 to drop into a three-way tie for fourth with Charles Howell III (69) and David Toms (69) at 8 under.
Defending champion Zach Johnson (70) and Sugarloaf resident Stewart Cink (71) were seven strokes back at 5 under.
ALSO FRIDAYSYBASE CLASSIC: Despite being under par for the round and having a share of the lead, Rachel Hetherington wasn't overly disappointed Friday when the LPGA Tour took the rare step of washing out play in the Sybase Classic and reducing the $2 million tournament from 72 to 54 holes.
Steady rain had saturated three greens, flooded a couple of bunkers and created conditions that would have forced players to compete on two very different courses at the Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, N.J.
Hetherington, an eight-time winner who has struggled in recent years, shared the first-round lead with Annika Sorenstam and Song-Hee Kim at 5 under.
REGIONS CHARITY CLASSIC: Andy Bean and Monday qualifier Mike Goodes shot 7-under 65s to share the first-round lead in the Champions Tour event in Hoover, Ala.
Leading money winner Bernhard Langer was two strokes back on the 7,503-yard Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Ross Bridge course. A two-time winner this year on the 50-and-over tour, Langer tied for 15th Sunday in The Players Championship on the PGA Tour.
Without an exemption, Goodes had to qualify for the tournament on Monday and matched his best round since joining the Champions Tour in 2006.
Bean also is an unlikely leader. His only top-25 finish this year came when he tied for fourth at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf on April 27, and he has one win in 130 Champions Tour events.
IRISH OPEN: France's Michael Lorenzo-Vera shot a 2-under 70 to take a one-stroke lead after the second round in Adare, Ireland.
The 23-year-old Lorenzo-Vera, the PGA European Challenge Tour money leader last year, had a 6-under 138 total on the Adare Manor course.
Germany's Marcel Siem (71) was second, and Australia's Richard Green (74) and Spain's Pablo Larrazabal (70) followed at 4 under.
Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke (69) topped a group at 3 under. Ireland's Padraig Harrington, the defending champion, was 1 under after a 71.
