Mathew Goggin birdied four of the first five holes Friday before strapping in for a wild ride of birdies and bogeys that ultimately added up to an even-par 72 at the Memorial that tied him for the lead with two-time champion Kenny Perry, who recovered from a rugged start for a 71 at Dublin, Ohio.
They were at 7-under 137, one shot clear of Jerry Kelly.
Only three players broke 70 on Friday, with former Virginia Tech golfer Johnson Wagner turning in a remarkable 67. Twenty players couldn't break 80.

But on the 18th hole, Parker's 6-foot birdie putt to halve the match just missed, giving the Americans a 2-1 lead after the morning session.
Sally Watson won both her matches for GB&I, including a foursomes victory with Michele Thomson over Duke golfers Mina Harigae and Jennie Lee.
