CIAA honors area players

St. Aug's, Shaw athletes among league's basketball stars

Players from Elizabeth City State swept the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's player of the year awards announced on Wednesday.

The Vikings' Anthony Hilliard, a junior forward, won the men's award, and senior center Celeste Trahan won the women's award.

Trahan also was the women's defensive player of the year. Virginia Union's Brad Byerson won the men's honor.

Also making the men's team were junior guard Will Gill of St. Augustine's and Shaw's Damola Obadina, a senior forward.

Shaw's Nicky Souter, a senior forward, made the women's team, as did Johnson C. Smith's Rochelle Bodie, a senior forward from Raleigh, and Fayetteville State's Leticia Dickson, a senior guard from Smithfield.

SWIMMING

ACC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS: On the opening day at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Virginia set a conference and ACC meet record in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:09.12) and wrapped up the opening day atop of the team standings with 74 points.

Florida State was second with 66 points, and UNC third at 62. Duke was tied for fifth, and N.C. State was eighth.

SOFTBALL

NORTH CAROLINA 9-12, CAMPBELL 0-0: The Tar Heels used no-hitters from Danielle Spaulding and Lisa Norris to sweep the visiting Camels.

Each pitcher walked one and struck out nine in five innings for her win.

N.C. STATE MOVES GAMES: Because of a bad weather forecast, the Wolfpack's two-game series scheduled for today at Elon has been rescheduled for April 3.

BASEBALL

COKER 14, ST. AUGUSTINE'S 9: The Falcons (1-4) rallied with a four-run sixth to trail 8-5, but the host Cobras (6-6) added four in their half of the inning for the win at Hartsville, S.C.

MEN'S SOCCER

APPALACHIAN STATE HIRES COACH: Shaun Pendleton, NCAA Division II's all-time winningest men's soccer coach, has been hired as Appalachian State's 10th coach, athletic director Charlie Cobb said Wednesday.

Pendleton, from Sheffield, England, has a 320-53-13 (.846) record in 19 seasons, including 17 at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.

FOOTBALL

LOUISVILLE PLAYER DISMISSED: Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe has dismissed cornerback Rod Council, 22, from the team after Council allegedly robbed a gas station early Wednesday.

Council, 22, from West Charlotte High, was being held at the Haywood County Detention Center in Waynesville, N.C.

Council, who had one year of eligibility remaining, had 32 tackles and two interceptions last year for the Cardinals.
