UNC evens series at Miami

The battle between the No. 1 and No. 2 college baseball teams in the nation is all even.

No. 2 North Carolina pounded out 16 hits and used strong relief pitched to hold off No. 1 Miami and win 10-6 on Friday night in Coral Gables, Fla.

The Tar Heels (44-10, 21-7 ACC), who lost the opener 12-2 on Thursday, took a 9-0 lead against Miami (43-7, 23-4) in the second game of the series.

The Heels scored three runs in the second after two were out. Tim Federowicz and Garrett Gore delivered back-to-back singles and Seth Williams drove in one run with a single. Greg Holt reached on an error and Gore and Williams both scored.

In the fourth, the Heels went up 6-0. Williams had a two-RBI double and Dustin Ackley had an RBI single.

The Tar Heels added a single run in the fifth and two in the sixth on Tim Fedroff's two-run homer.

Florida State got to UNC starter Adam Warren (8-1) in the sixth.

Mark Sobolewski hit a grand slam to make it 9-4.

Warren went 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Relievers Brian Moran gave and Rob Wooten gave up one run each to keep the Noles from making a comeback.

UNC added one run in the eighth on Chad Flack's RBI groundout.

Ackley, Fedroff and Kyle Seager had three hits each for the Tar Heels.

Federowicz, Gore and Williams had two hits each for UNC, which outhit the Seminoles 16-9.

Yonder Alonso also homered for Florida State.
