Duke golfer honored

Blumenherst an award finalist

Two days after guiding Duke to its third straight NCAA championship, sophomore Amanda Blumenherst was named one of four finalists for the Golf Honda Sports Award.

The winner, after nationwide balloting, will become a candidate for The Honda-Broderick Cup, awarded annually to the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.

Blumenherst, from Scottsdale, Ariz., had a school-record 71.00 stroke average to go along with four victories, seven top-five and 10 top-10 finishes in 10 tournaments.

Blumenherst was also named the ACC Player of the Year for the second straight year.

BASKETBALL

VILLANOVA STAR PORTER DIES OF INJURIES: Howard Porter, one of the best players in Villanova basketball history, died after he was found severely beaten in an alley more than a week ago. He was 58.

Porter died Saturday night, Minneapolis Police Lt. Kim Lund said Sunday. Police were awaiting a report from the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

NORTHWESTERN 15, VIRGINIA 13: Hilary Bowen helped top-seeded Northwestern become the second team in NCAA history to win three consecutive Division I women's lacrosse national championships, scoring five goals in a victory over second-seeded Virginia in Philadelphia.

DEACONS FLAME OUT: Wake Forest's doubles team of Mariusz Adamski and Todd Paul were defeated by Kevin Anderson and Ryan Rowe of Illinois, the defending national champions, 7-5, 7-5 in the NCAA semifinals in Athens, Ga.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

UNC CLOSE TO FIRST TITLE: North Carolina seniors Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long moved to within one win of UNC's first national championship with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over TCU's Ana Cetnik and Anna Sydorska in Athens, Ga. The finals are today.

TRACK AND FIELD

DIVISION I REGIONALS: Blue Devils senior Elizabeth Wort ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a Duke and NCAA east regional record 9:52.34 on Saturday night in Gainesville, Fla.

In the pole vault, junior Lara Jones earned her first trip to the NCAAs by placing fifth with a vault of 12 feet and 6 inches.

DIVISION II FINALS: N.C. Central senior Hakeem Mohammed posted a career-best time of 45.37 seconds in the 400-meter dash, to win the national title Saturday at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. It was the fastest time at the NCAAs since 1998.

In the triple jump, Jessica Mills placed second with 12.74 meters, earning All-America honors.

Other N.C. Central All-Americas were Karjuan Williams in both the men's 400 dash, Maurice Gailey in the men's 200, and Brandon Jones in the men's 800.
