UCLA hires Chow

Norm Chow, who tutored a pair of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks at Southern California, is returning as offensive coordinator at crosstown rival UCLA.

Chow, fired last week by the Tennessee Titans, joins the staff of new coach Rick Neuheisel.

"I've always admired his work," Neuheisel said of Chow, who was offensive coordinator at N.C. State in 2000.

BASKETBALL

HOKIES' ALLEN APOLOGIZES: A Virginia Tech basketball player suspended by the ACC for bumping a referee has apologized.

The ACC suspended freshman forward Jeff Allen for two games Sunday for making inappropriate contact with an official during the Hokies' game at Georgia Tech on Saturday. In a statement released Monday by Virginia Tech, Allen apologized, saying he made "a terrible mistake" and let his emotions get the best of him.

ACC AWARDS: Maryland's James Gist and Wake Forest's James Johnson (rookie) won the men's ACC weekly awards on Monday.

Maryland's Crystal Langhorne and Georgia Tech's Alex Montgomery (rookie) received the women's weekly awards.

BRIEFLY: Oregon State fired basketball coach Jay John, whose team is 6-12 this season and winless in the Pac-10.

* Bucknell basketball coach Pat Flannery has been reprimanded and will be suspended for one game for arguing a call during Friday's game against Holy Cross.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

* St. Augustine's freshman Allison Sikes was named CIAA women's basketball rookie of the week on Monday for the third time this season.

BARTON-MOUNT OLIVE ON TV: When Barton hosts Mount Olive on March 1, it will be historic for the Conference Carolinas.

It will be the league's first nationally televised live broadcast. CSTV and Fox Sports Net will air the game, which is scheduled to start at noon, according to the Barton College Web site.

MEN'S SOCCER

VIDOVICH HONORED: Wake Forest men's soccer coach Jay Vidovich was named the NSCAA Coach of the Year, following a successful season with the Demon Deacons that ended with a national title.
